Register for Review Courses

Simon offers two classes to brush up on your math skills prior to starting your program:

  • Math Review Course (MSM 400)
  • Math for Management (MSM 491)

Please refer to your acceptance letter to verify if you are required to complete one of these courses as a condition of your admission. Students who are not required to complete these courses are still welcome to register; it may be recommended in your acceptance letter, or you may be interested in refreshing your skill-set prior to the start of the program.

See below for details about each math review course.

Math Review Course (MSM 400)

  • Offered prior to start of every summer, fall, and winter term
  • Non-credit master’s level course
  • No grade provided
  • Classes all held on campus at Simon
  • Cost: $600
  • Cost to participate is not included in program tuition fees and is not covered by merit-based scholarship or University of Rochester tuition benefits
  • To register for Math Review, print and fill out Registration form for MSM 400 from the Registrar’s website and follow instructions on the form

Course Description: This provides a review of statistics, algebra, and calculus concepts that are considered prerequisite to the program. Topics include sets, differentiation, maxima-minima, partial derivatives, and simple integration. This is especially suited for students with little mathematics background, students who wish to bolster their confidence in their math skills, or students who have not had college-level algebra and calculus in the recent past. Many of these concepts will be used in the core classes. View the 2019 syllabus.

Math for Management (MSM 491)

  • Offered during summer term only
  • 2-credit master’s level course (the 2019–2020 credit hour rate is $2079)
  • Grade provided
  • Classes all held on campus at Simon
  • Cost to participate is not included in program tuition fees and cannot be covered by merit-based scholarship, but it CAN be covered by University of Rochester tuition benefits
  • To register for Math for Management, print and fill out Registration form for MSM 491 from the Registrar’s website and follow the instructions on the form

Course Description: This is more intensive than MSM 400. Analysis and concepts in modern business analysis rely heavily on quantitative methods. The objective of this course is to bring incoming MBA or MS students "up to speed" with respect to the mathematical and statistical knowledge expected of them. The complexity of the course is on par with (college) freshman-year calculus, algebra, and introduction to probability and statistics. Necessary theories and intuition behind them will be covered. The focus of the course is primarily on applications in business, economics, and related areas.

Instructor: Jagan Jacob

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., May 21 – July 10, 2020
