January 4-8, 2021 (Spring Entry)

MS Welcome Week, as part of Orientation, is the next step toward becoming a #SIMONSTRONG leader. This week of programming is designed to bring out your inner leader, help you develop a lasting bond with your new classmates, enhance your personal and professional brand, and prepare you to be a successful job candidate.

MS Welcome Week is mandatory for all incoming MS students. Student participation is expected for all Welcome Week programming.

Learn more about Welcome Week using the links below.

WELCOME WEEK REGISTRATION

We are offering a hybrid version of Welcome Week—a combination of in-person and online content—to best accommodate each student’s unique situation. Unlike classes, however, all content is synchronous. If you are only able to join us online, we ask that you still attend all sessions virtually at their scheduled time.

HYBRID WELCOME WEEK

We invite you to join us on campus for select sessions of Welcome Week programming.*

If you register for Hybrid Welcome Week, you may choose to attend in person one day and decide to attend programming online for the remainder of Welcome Week. Attending all select in-person sessions is not mandatory. If you think you may want to attend one or more sessions in person, please register for Hybrid Welcome Week.

*If you are required to quarantine through some or all of Welcome Week, please do not come to campus while you are still in quarantine. If your quarantine will end in time for you to attend an in-person session, you may still register for Hybrid Welcome Week.

VIRTUAL WELCOME WEEK

We invite you to join us online for all Welcome Week programming.

If you register for Virtual Welcome Week, you will be required to attend all sessions online. Due to room capacities and physical distancing guidelines, we cannot allow students to attend any in-person sessions unless they have registered for Hybrid Welcome Week.

MS WELCOME WEEK SCHEDULE

Please follow the Full-Time MS Google calendar for the most updated MS Welcome Week schedule. Note that schedule and details are subject to change.

Each day is listed as either hybrid or virtual format.

  • Hybrid: Some or all programming that day is offered in a hybrid format. If you registered for Hybrid Welcome Week and you are not in quarantine, please join us for these sessions on campus. Please check the Google Calendar to confirm which sessions are offered in person and which are online only. If you are unable to come to campus, please join us for these sessions online.
  • Virtual: All programming that day is offered online.

Optional: Small Group Discussions with the Benet Center & OSE Academic Advising Meetings

Benet Career Management Center Career Strategy Meetings: Career planning can be an overwhelming process, complicated by many factors including self-perceptions, others' expectations, and the economy. The Benet Career Management Center Team is here to support your career search efforts. The goal of these optional small group discussions during Welcome Week is to allow incoming MS students the opportunity to begin to build a professional relationship with your discipline-specific Benet Career Advisor. Students who choose to register are asked to turn their cameras on and be prepared to briefly introduce themselves to the group. We also encourage you to bring any general career questions you may have so far.

Remember:

  • Career Advising is a chance for you to find out about yourself, so come ready to talk with your advisor and be open to questions and suggestions.
  • The Benet Career Advisors will NOT tell you what career is best for you but will give you more information to help you decide on your own.
  • Benet Career Advisors are NOT your academic advisor and will not assist with academic curriculum assistance and will defer you to your Office of Student Engagement Academic Advisor for these matters.

If you have questions specific to your individual career search, 1:1 advising will open for all students who have completed the Benet Center Onboarding Program on Monday, January 11, 2021.

These 30-minute-long sessions are limited to groups of 5 and sign-up is on a first-come-first-served basis. To register for this optional session visit SimonWorks > Events > Workshops or click here.

OSE Academic Advising Meetings: To request a 1:1 advising appointment, email your academic advisor directly.

BLACKBOARD

Office of Student Engagement (Orientation 2021)
  • Please remember to view all mandatory webcasts and recordings, as part of Online Orientation, before the start of Welcome Week.
Benet Center Onboarding:
  • All incoming students should complete Benet Center Modules 1-4 before the start of Welcome Week. Completion of this program is directly tied to access to 1:1 appointments with Benet Center Advisors during Welcome Week and beyond.
  • All four “Career Education Series” and all five “Careers in…” recordings are available for review on the Benet Center Onboarding Blackboard site. Please take time to review this content prior to your 1:1 meeting requests.

TECHNOLOGY

If you are planning to join us on campus for Welcome Week, please do not worry about bringing a laptop or headphones. You will not have to log into Zoom individually for any of our sessions.

ATTIRE

Whether you’re joining us in person or online, please dress in business casual attire.

Business Casual: Less formal than business attire, and includes: dress pants or skirt, collared shirt or blouse, sport coat, more unique jewelry, dressy sweater, golf shirt, loafers/more relaxed shoes, and closed- or open-toe shoes.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

If you plan to join us on campus at all, whether for Welcome Week, classes, or other programming, you must complete the Return to Campus: COVID-19 Campus Safety Training on Blackboard.

If you have registered for Hybrid Welcome Week and plan to join us on campus, please participate in the daily Dr. Chat Bot online tool. This daily screen process takes less than two minutes and be completed on a computer, tablet, or smart phone with internet access. All individuals planning to come to campus must answer questions in Dr. Chat Bot before coming to campus.

We have changed the format of our classrooms to accommodate physical distancing. Masks must be worn in the classroom and around the building to maintain the health and safety of everyone. No eating or drinking will be allowed in the classroom.

We encourage you to bring your own masks to campus. If you misplaced your mask, you can pick up a mask from two locations: either at the Office of Student Engagement (2nd Floor of Schlegel Hall) or the IT Help Desk (3rd Floor of Gleason Hall). Hand sanitizer will be available in building entryways and common areas. Disinfecting wipes will be available outside of all classrooms so that you can wipe down your area upon arrival.

All individuals on campus should always remain physically separated from others by at least 6 feet, acknowledging that hallways as well as exits to rooms and buildings will not accommodate a 6-foot separation.

When with other people, masks should be worn in addition to distancing measures. Masking exceptions include being outside with more than six feet away from others.

If you registered for Hybrid Welcome Week and feel like you cannot or should not come to campus for any reason, we encourage you to prioritize your health (and the health of others) and stay home and join us virtually. If you are unable to join us virtually, please contact studentengagement@simon.rochester.edu.

PARKING, SHUTTLES, & TRANSPORTATION

ParkingA valid University parking permit is required on campus. Parking permits for the 2020–21 academic year can be purchased at the Parking Management Center (70 Goler House). When purchasing a parking pass, be sure to bring a valid form of identification; your license plate number; and your car’s color, make, model, and year. Credit cards are accepted. We suggest allowing 15–30 minutes to park and walk from your lot to Schlegel and Gleason halls

Shuttles: You may use a University shuttle to get to campus, as shuttles will be running from primary graduate housing and around the city. The shuttle schedules for January 4-29, 2021 are online. The full spring schedule will be posted shortly.

Due to safety requirements during COVID-19, shuttle capacity has been reduced to 50% seating capacity only (no standing allowed). Masks will be required on all shuttles regardless of the number of riders.

Given restricted capacity, we strongly recommend using alternative transportation to get to campus as we cannot yet determine the wait time and demand of shuttles.

Alternative Transportation: In addition to University shuttles, you may utilize the Rochester city bus system, Regional Transit Service (RTS), with $1 fares; ride-share services like Uber and Lyft, walking, or biking to campus.
