Rochester has long been a city of innovation, ideas, and social change. Known first as the "Flour City" for its booming milling industry and later as the "Flower City" for its world- renowned nurseries, Rochester also played a pivotal role in the abolitionist movement. Frederick Douglass published The North Star here and helped freedom seekers through the Underground Railroad, while Susan B. Anthony advanced the fight for women's suffrage.
That legacy of innovation helped give rise to pioneering companies such as Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch + Lomb and continues today through world-class healthcare, optics, imaging, entrepreneurship, and higher education.
