"Don't be afraid! Don't be afraid to take a class that just seems cool; don't be afraid to join a club that offers nothing but pure fun; don't be afraid to step out of your shell; don't be afraid to apply for roles your peers dismiss; don't be afraid to constantly look for new opportunities, challenges, and environments; don't be afraid to ask for help; and don't be afraid to be yourself. Be proud of who you are. You earned it."
For Megan Wu, the University of Rochester provided the freedom to pursue a wide range of intellectual passions while building a strong foundation in finance. Alongside studying Business and Economics, she explored interests in English literature, classics, and journalism, creating an educational experience that was both personally meaningful and professionally valuable. The ability to combine diverse interests helped her develop the confidence, curiosity, and adaptability that would shape her future career.
Preparing for a Career in Finance
Megan chose to study Finance because it offered a deep understanding of one of the most foundational aspects of modern life. Through her coursework, she developed strong analytical and problem-solving skills while gaining insight into financial systems and decision-making.
Just as importantly, Rochester encouraged her to think beyond traditional career paths. The University's emphasis on exploration and intellectual curiosity helped her develop the confidence to pursue opportunities that aligned with both her interests and values.
Finding Mentors and Community
One of the most influential experiences of Megan's undergraduate journey was her involvement with Meliora Financial Group. Serving as Co-Executive Director, she found mentors, close friends, and a supportive professional community that played a central role in her personal and professional development.
Through Meliora Financial Group, she built lasting relationships with peers who challenged, encouraged, and inspired her throughout her time at Rochester. The connections she formed within the business community continue to serve as an invaluable source of support as she begins her career.
Leadership Through Innovation
Megan also served as Team Lead on the iZone Curriculum Design Team, an experience she describes as transformative. The role challenged her to think creatively, solve complex problems, and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and community members from a wide range of backgrounds.
The work required innovation, curiosity, and a willingness to approach challenges from new perspectives—qualities that Megan hopes to prioritize throughout her professional career.
The Rochester Advantage
For Megan, the most distinctive aspect of the Rochester experience was the support she received from professors, mentors, friends, and campus organizations. She entered college excited but uncertain about her future, and found a community that encouraged her growth in ways she never anticipated.
Surrounded by diverse perspectives, opportunities, and role models, she learned to embrace what she loves, pursue unconventional paths, and trust in her own abilities. Those lessons continue to guide her as she prepares for the next chapter.
After graduation, Megan will join Goldman Sachs as a Wealth Management Analyst, where she looks forward to building upon the skills, relationships, and experiences she developed during her time at Rochester.
