"Do things even when you feel scared or anxious. Opportunities will not wait for you, so take chances and go after them all."
For Winfred Lin, business was appealing because of its versatility. Recognizing that organizations across every industry rely on strong business leaders to grow and scale, he chose to study Business while complementing it with Entrepreneurship and Psychology. Together, these disciplines provided a foundation that combined strategic thinking, innovation, and an understanding of human behavior.
Preparing for the Professional World
Winfred credits the University of Rochester's hands-on learning environment with preparing him for the workforce. Through leadership positions across numerous campus organizations and departments, he gained practical experience managing budgets, collaborating with external partners, coordinating projects, and working alongside senior university administrators.
These opportunities allowed him to develop business acumen far beyond the classroom while building the confidence to navigate complex organizational challenges and contribute effectively in professional settings.
Learning Through Leadership
Throughout his time at Rochester, Winfred embraced opportunities across campus. He served as a Peer Career Advisor at the Greene Center, Academic Programs Support Coordinator in the School of Nursing, Peer Language Tutor at the Language Center, Strategic Initiatives Intern in the Office of Engagement and Enrichment, Admissions Associate in Undergraduate Admissions, Student Alumni Ambassador, and Student Engagement Assistant at Simon Business School.
In addition, he held several leadership positions within Students’ Association Government and competed as a member of Mock Trial. Each role provided unique opportunities to strengthen communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills while expanding his professional network.
The Rochester Advantage
One of the most distinctive advantages Winfred gained from Rochester was adaptability. By working across multiple offices, teams, and organizations, he learned how to approach unfamiliar challenges, collaborate with diverse groups of people, and develop effective solutions in fast-changing environments.
These experiences reinforced his ability to think strategically, remain flexible, and confidently tackle difficult problems—skills that will serve him well throughout his career.
After graduation, Winfred will join Capital One's Management Rotational Program, where he looks forward to continuing his leadership development while gaining exposure to multiple areas of the business.
