Simon faculty research explores how AI is reshaping online knowledge communities

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how people learn, work, and share knowledge, new research co-authored by Jinyang Zheng, assistant professor of information systems at University of Rochester Simon Business School, explores how AI is transforming digital knowledge ecosystems. Zheng's research examines how AI and digital technologies transform organizations and online platforms, helping businesses better understand the opportunities and challenges of an increasingly AI-enabled world.

His latest paper, "Can ChatGPT Kill User-Generated Q&A Platforms?", was recently published in Information Systems Research, a peer-reviewed journal in the field of information systems.

The paper examines how large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are reshaping user-generated knowledge-sharing platforms. Analyzing data from Stack Overflow, the researchers found that while ChatGPT reduced the volume of questions posted on the platform, the remaining questions became more complex and higher quality on average.

The findings suggest AI is reshaping—not replacing—online knowledge ecosystems, with communities evolving toward smaller, more specialized, expert-driven discussions. The research offers valuable insights for platform managers, technology leaders, and AI developers working to sustain user-generated knowledge ecosystems while embracing AI innovation.
