Shreeya Sachdev ’26 (MBA) | University of Rochester Simon Business School MBA 2026 Candidate

From rigorous thinking to real-world practice

As an international student, one of my biggest concerns before starting my MBA at Simon Business School at University of Rochester was the lack of prior work experience in the U.S. I knew the classroom would give me strong foundations, but I wasn’t sure how I would bridge the gap between theory and actually working in a U.S. professional environment. Experiential learning and club involvement at Simon played a huge role in closing that gap and helping me build confidence.

Experiential learning beyond the classroom

One of my most rewarding experiences has been serving as a Project Manager at Simon Vision Consulting (SVC). This role gave me hands-on exposure to real client work and helped me understand how consulting operates in practice. I worked on structuring ambiguous problems, managing stakeholder expectations, coordinating timelines, and leading a diverse team. It pushed me to develop leadership, communication, and people-management skills that go far beyond what you can learn in a classroom. For me, SVC was instrumental in understanding U.S. workplace dynamics and applying my skills in a real-world setting.

Beyond consulting projects, Simon offers several other experiential opportunities. Programs like the Simon Venture Fund allow students to engage with startups, investment decisions, and due diligence, helping build practical exposure in entrepreneurship and investing.

Dynamic connections through clubs

Clubs also play a huge role in shaping the experiential learning environment at Simon. Professional clubs like the Consulting Club are incredibly helpful - they organize casing workshops, mock interviews, and regular updates on the recruiting landscape, which makes navigating consulting recruitment much more structured and less overwhelming. These clubs keep students informed about timelines, expectations, and what firms are currently looking for. In addition, both professional and social clubs regularly organize networking events, speaker sessions, skill-building workshops, and social gatherings, ensuring there’s always something happening and something new to learn.

Leadership in action

I’ve also been deeply involved in club leadership, serving as an MBA Representative for Simon Women in Business, later as Vice President of Operations & Finance, and currently as Engagement Director for SVC. These leadership roles taught me how to organize events, manage budgets, communicate effectively, and support a larger community.

Transformational Growth

Together, these experiences have helped me grow not just professionally, but personally - building confidence, sharpening people-management skills, and preparing me to lead in real-world settings. At Simon, experiential learning and club involvement truly complement the academic experience and play a critical role in shaping well-rounded leaders.
