What is Alpha Kappa Psi?

AKPsi is a Pre-professional, co-ed fraternity, open to all majors.

How will AKPsi help me?

Socially
Big-little pairing helps you get more involved in the organization and find your “family,” similar to other Greek organizations. Members participate in many social events throughout the semester—especially after initiation into the brotherhood. These include off-campus outings like ice skating at ROC Holiday Village, trips to Pittsford Dairy for ice cream, and group dinners, as well as on-campus study sessions, movie nights, and game nights. Along the way, you’ll meet a diverse group of students from across the country and around the world, representing a wide range of majors and interests—people you can learn from and build lasting friendships with throughout your college experience.

Academically
We pride ourselves on being an academically motivated and driven organization, where you can connect with peers who inspire you to work hard and always have someone to study with. Meet others pursuing the same field of study as you, and find brothers who are taking—or have previously taken—the same classes. Often, you’ll even find someone who has served as a TA for a class you might need a little extra help in.

Professionally
Mentor-mentee pairing: Get matched with a brother in your field of study or intended career for one-on-one guidance, including resume and cover letter review and support with internship applications.

Pledging process: If invited to interview and then inducted, you will begin a 10-week pledging program. During this time, you’ll participate in coffee chats with brothers, practice proper scheduling and email etiquette for your industry, and take part in scheduled behavioral and technical interviews aligned with your desired internship or career path.

You’ll also have the opportunity to meet AKPsi alumni working in your intended field—often in-person on campus at events hosted by the fraternity.

Leadership opportunities: Chair position elections are held every semester, and you become eligible as soon as your first semester after initiation. Executive Board elections take place at the start of each calendar year.

For many careers—finance in particular—strong interview skills are essential. Even in fields where these skills are less emphasized, such as the natural sciences, mastering professional communication and interpersonal skills can give you a significant advantage over your peers.

How do you join AKPsi?
Any URochester undergraduate student is eligible to join, including first-semester freshmen—unlike many other Greek organizations. Start by attending information sessions and open recruitment (rush) events early in the semester. These sessions are open to all, and you typically need to attend at least two to qualify to submit an application.

After reviewing applications, select potential new members (PNMs) are invited to attend closed rush events the following week. These usually include two additional events and a 10-minute behavioral interview at the end of the week. All participants receive interview feedback, and select PNMs are offered bids—official invitations to begin the pledging process.

Tips for success: Be engaged in conversations with brothers, speak to different members at multiple events, and prepare by reviewing common behavioral interview questions. Take advantage of Greene Center resources for resume, cover letter, and interview guidance, as well as AKPsi professional events.

It may seem like a lot, but the organization is very accommodating and encourages communication if any personal or scheduling conflicts arise.

What is the time commitment?

AKPsi is what you make of it—the more you invest in the experience, the more you’ll get out of it. During the rush period, the minimum attendance is two events, typically totaling around two hours, not including the time you spend preparing your application, which can range from 15 minutes to several hours depending on your approach.

During the pledging process, we recommend treating the workload like a two-credit class. Some weeks may require only two hours (including your weekly pledge meeting and study session or dinner with your pledge class), while other weeks may demand five or more hours for coffee chats, brotherhood events, and additional pledge activities.
