What do you wish you had known before starting the program?

Jess Friedman

Jess Friedman: Honestly, I wish I had understood just how transformative this journey would be, both professionally and personally. I came into the program expecting to gain knowledge, expand my network, and refine my skills, but I didn’t realize just how much I’d grow as a person. Whether it’s taking on leadership roles in clubs, speaking up more in class discussions, or even seeking out mentorship, there’s so much opportunity if you’re open to it. Also, it’s okay not to have everything figured out before you start. This program and my peers have helped me to find so much clarity throughout this journey, and the best part is that we are ever-changing!

Dhananjay (Jay) Palta: Before starting at Simon, I was apprehensive about navigating the networking and recruiting aspects of MBA life. During my initial research, I had heard that at many schools, students are largely left to manage these challenges on their own. However, Simon’s Benet Career Management Center exceeded my expectations by providing robust support systems every step of the way. For example, the Benet Career Peers—a group of experienced second-year students—offer personalized assistance, whether it’s refining your résumé or conducting mock interviews. Additionally, Simon organizes career-focused treks across the country, enabling students to connect in person with alumni and expand their professional networks. These resources truly set Simon apart and have been invaluable in my journey.

Shresha Karmacharya: Before starting the Simon MBA program, I knew about the school’s incredible diversity, but I didn’t realize just how easy it would be to integrate into the community. From day one I felt welcomed and included, thanks to the supportive and collaborative environment that Simon fosters. The connections I’ve made here have enriched both my professional and personal life in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.

How did you decide that this specific program was right for you?

Jess Friedman: After I attended Experience Simon Weekend, it all just clicked. Meeting the professors, current students, and staff gave me a sense of the community and culture here, it was welcoming, supportive, and inspiring all at once. Seeing the campus in person also solidified my decision. The small class sizes were a huge draw for me, I knew I’d

have the chance to build meaningful relationships with my professors and classmates, which is something I truly value. I wanted an experience where I felt like I belonged and could grow, and Simon checked those boxes.

Jay Palta: Simon stood out to me because it met all the key criteria I was looking for in an MBA program. It offers a close-knit, supportive community, paired with the rich history and culture of Rochester. The school’s analytically driven curriculum was also a perfect fit for my background in engineering and consulting, providing the opportunity to build skills that are highly valued in today’s business environment. As someone targeting a career in the tech industry, I was particularly drawn to Simon’s specializations in areas like Pricing, Strategy, and Product Management. The program’s project-based electives, such as the product management workshop, allow students to apply their learning while collaborating with US-based companies. That was another compelling factor, offering both hands-on experience and credibility with recruiters.

Shresha Karmacharya: My decision to join Simon was driven by the outstanding support I received from the administration during my admissions journey. My admissions counselor, Andrew Brayda, went above and beyond to guide me through the process and help me navigate my b-school decision. The genuine care and effort I experienced made it clear that if Simon’s support was this strong before I even started, I’d be surrounded by the right people in the right place once I joined.

What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to someone considering a Simon MBA?

Jay Palta
Jay Palta  '25S (MBA)

Jess Friedman: Visit the campus if you can, it’s such a game-changer. There’s only so much you can see from a website or brochure, and experiencing Simon in person gives you a completely different perspective. Walk around, sit in on a class, talk to students and faculty, and imagine yourself there. Beyond that, take some time to explore the clubs, initiatives, and opportunities available. Think about what resonates with you and how you could contribute to the community. Simon isn’t just about academics; it’s about making an impact, so reflect on what that could mean for you. And lastly, don’t underestimate the value of connecting with current students, they’re incredible resources and can offer true insights.

Jay Palta: As cliché as it sounds, be yourself. Authenticity is deeply valued at Simon, and showing your true personality can set you apart during the admissions process and beyond. Don’t hesitate to share the emotions and experiences that have shaped who you are and how you’ve navigated challenges. While strong analytical skills are important, the ability to tell compelling stories is equally critical to succeeding in a business career. Let your unique voice shine through!

Shresha Karmacharya: Fully embrace everything that Simon and Rochester have to offer. As a smaller-sized MBA program, Simon packs a punch with its vibrant and active student-led clubs, a close-knit community, and access to incredible outdoor activities. Winter brings snowy adventures that are uniquely Rochester—just make sure to get a thick jacket and some sturdy boots! The opportunities here are endless if you dive in with an open mind.

What’s your favorite Rochester restaurant?

Jess Friedman: Oh, this one’s easy: Redd is hands-down my favorite! It’s such a fabulous spot with an incredible seasonal menu, and the vibe is perfect if you’re looking for something upscale. That said, I can’t always splurge, so when I’m keeping it casual, Pearson’s is my go-to brunch spot. Their food is consistently amazing, and it is a lovely co-workspace. Rochester has so many hidden gems!

Jay Palta: Who would have guessed that vegan pizza could rival a classic New York slice? I was blown away when I tried Squatcho’s for the first time. Their toppings are made fresh daily from scratch, using locally sourced ingredients, and they have mastered the art of transforming plant-based ingredients into creative, flavorful combinations. It’s a must-try for anyone in Rochester!

Shresha Karmacharya: I’ve discovered some amazing restaurants in Rochester, each perfect for different occasions. To celebrate internships, my friends and I went to Nosh, which had something for everyone. When my parents visited during the summer, we headed to Genesee Brew House one evening to enjoy a stunning sunset over High Falls paired with locally brewed beer. But my consistent favorite has to be Crave.
