Your path to the PhD in Information Systems

Simon’s PhD in Information Systems and Technology explores the business applications and management of information technology through rigorous analytical and quantitative approaches. Faculty and student research has advanced the field of information systems, with particular emphasis on information systems economics and machine learning models.

The first year

Build a strong methodological foundation through coursework at Simon Business School and the University of Rochester. Demonstrate proficiency in designated courses to satisfy preliminary requirements, and complete a research-focused first-year paper by August 31, at the start of your second year.

The second year

Deepen your knowledge of information systems by collaborating with faculty on two papers exploring distinct research topics, due May 31. Prepare a qualifying exam paper, typically an expanded version of one of these projects, for submission by November 30 of your third year.

The third year

Continue advanced coursework after passing the qualifying exam and begin developing your dissertation. Apply your analytical and research skills to questions involving the design, performance analysis, and optimization of information systems as you transition toward independent doctoral research.

Key program milestones

Thesis and proposal: Students are expected to submit a thesis proposal and identify a faculty advisor and committee members who have agreed to serve on their dissertation committee. The dissertation must demonstrate original scholarship through a critical or synthetic examination of a suitable subject, a creative contribution, or independent research presented in a form suitable for publication. Specific requirements and deadlines for the proposal are determined by the program area.

Advancement to candidacy: Students advance to candidacy after passing the preliminary and qualifying exams. Following the qualifying exam, the administering faculty evaluate each student's performance and make a recommendation for advancement to the PhD Faculty Director and Senior Associate Dean of Faculty.

Summer math camp: A strong foundation in mathematics and statistics is essential for success in Simon's rigorous PhD program. To help incoming students prepare for doctoral coursework, Simon offers summer math preparation courses designed to strengthen their quantitative skills. Additional details about course offerings and scheduling will be shared as they become available.
