The following blog post was written by Jenny Timineri, current Professional MBA student and former Simon Games PMBA grand prize winner. The Fall Simon Games are designed for those interested in the Full-Time MBA, a full-time MS program, or the January start PMBA program.

My favorite video game console was the Nintendo 64. I paid no mind to how senseless the three-gripped controller design was because it meant I had all my favorite Mario games at my fingertips. This tells you very little about me except the fact that I’ve never considered myself a gamer. So you can imagine the nerves I felt when I signed up for Simon Games, knowing that the scholarship could be a life-changing opportunity.

If you’re wondering whether to compete, let me tell you: you absolutely should, even if it feels out of your comfort zone. Keep reading for my three biggest tips on how to approach Simon Games and start your journey to Simon Business School.

1. Make It Personal

My experience playing Simon Games started with a paradigm shift that parallels my entire journey here: what I put into this game and my education is entirely up to me. If I work hard and engage fully, I could walk across the graduation stage in two years. If not, I will still gain valuable experiences and connections. Simon Games offers immense potential; by trying a little of everything, asking questions, and going the extra mile, you will stand out and harness that limitless potential. For me, this happened when I reached out to an admissions staff member, accepted an invitation to a happy hour, and connected with current students and faculty. Simon Games isn’t just about the simulation—it’s a chance to meet fellow participants, current students, professors, and alumni who can help you on your path to success.
I vividly remember sharing a photo that showcased a bold moment in my life, one that seemed a little uncertain but perfectly aligned with the adventurous spirit of the simulation. This personal touch resonated with the judges and allowed them to see who I am beyond the numbers. Simon Games isn’t just about the simulation; it’s an opportunity to forge connections that can help shape your future.

2. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

When you start the simulation in Simon Games, you’ll make decisions every “quarter” based on your past results and future goals for your company. Focus on the goals you set, as those are the big things. Do you want your company to be an industry leader in profits? At what expense? Do you want to be environmentally conscious? At what expense? Keep in mind that the simulation is powered by an algorithm; the decisions you make need to tell a cohesive story. I made a significant decision in one quarter that caused my profits to plummet, but the algorithm didn’t know I was setting the course for my ultimate goals, which later reflected positively.

Remember, the simulation itself only earns you a seat at the finalist table where you can share your story. You’ll make a bigger impact because the people in that room—who you’ve connected with—aren’t just an algorithm. Whether you win the grand prize or not, Simon Games opens doors to networking, mentorship, and exclusive opportunities that can shape your business career.

3. You Can Do It

From my perspective, I’ve saved the best for last. You belong here as much as anyone else, regardless of how you might feel. You’ll be surrounded by big titles and achievements; don’t let others define your success. My path to winning Simon Games was ordinary. I didn’t have a childhood calling for this journey, nor did I work for a big company. At the time of the Games, I didn’t know anyone with an MBA. Years spent at the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital led me to a leadership role in the outdoor industry, where I felt underprepared. I often passed the billboard advertising Simon Games and thought, "Why not?"

After the simulation, I received the call that I had been selected as a finalist. On the day of my presentation, I entered a room filled with impressive candidates, and now, here I am, reflecting on my Simon Games victory and my time in the PMBA program—two things I never thought I’d say, and that even one year later still feels surreal.
